Blurb:
In the magical underworld of Victorian London, Tessa Gray has found safety with the Shadowhunters. But that safety proves fleeting when it becomes clear that the mysterious Magister will stop at nothing to use Tessa’s powers for his own dark ends.
With the help of the handsome, tortured Will and the devoted Jem, Tessa discovers that the Magister’s war on the Shadowhunters is deeply personal and fueled by revenge. To unravel the secrets of the past, the trio journeys from mist-shrouded Yorkshire to a manor house that holds untold horrors. When they encounter a clockwork demon bearing a warning for Will, they realize that the Magister knows their every move—and that one of their own has betrayed them.
Tessa is drawn more and more to Jem, though her longing for Will continues to unsettle her. But something is changing in Will. Could finding the Magister free Will from his secrets and give Tessa answers about who she really is? As their search leads to deadly peril, Tessa learns that secrets and lies can corrupt even the purest heart.
So finally picking back up this series months after I was gripped by Clockwork Angel.. I know, I suck at being a blogger- can I insert "hectic life" excuses here?
Anyway, I'm so glad I started getting into this series after years of loving The Mortal Instruments, I am kicking myself fro not caving to the book peer pressure sooner! (Speaking of, please pressure me into reading some more of your favorite books in the comments below!)
So for me, Clockwork Prince was the character development book in the series. I feel like Clockwork Angel was the book to introduce the characters, story-line, villain and main story thread that will run through the series and this book was to delve deeper into the relationships and characters themselves while also engaging with the plot.
The characters of the novel are really the main driving force behind this series. I think everyone who begins the series just wants to hear more and more of the characters and also have the plot and action going on in the background. The Will fan-girls would honestly pay Cassie for a 500 page novel of a week in the life of Will Herondale at this point!
But back to my review..the characters definitely o through a lot of development as the reader begins to learn more about them and about what motivates them both individually and as their slightly dysfunctional Institute family.
A character who always shines for me in this series is Charlotte. I adore Charlotte. She is so brave, kind, caring and just an all around strong independent woman. Her relationship with slightly eccentric, aloof and inventive husband Henry is such a beautiful relationship to read. They both lift the other up in the best way they can.
Another character I love is Sophie. Sophie is so great- she's straight talking, hardworking, strong and her budding relationship with a certain Lightwood made my heart warm because SOPHIE DESERVES ALL THE NICE THINGS!!!
Also Jessamine in this book-yikes
When discussing TID series, you gotta talk about the main trio- Tessa, Will and Jem. The classic love triangle that in most novels is so overdone and contrite but somehow Cassie Clare manages to wangle one into every novel and it for some reason works?? How does she do it..
Letting you in on a secret, I'm a Jem fan- strictly team Jem. Although I don't hate Will.
I feel like this novel was a big "Will" novel as we got to delve much deeper into his character, his background and his motivations. Will believes he has been cursed so that everyone he loves must die, hence the abrupt and cold nature he presents his nearest and dearest with. Seeing the soft and more tender side to Will really is his "real" side which he feels he cannot show to people. We see this side come out a lot with Jem and Tessa. Seeing how Will grew as a character in this novel was really powerful and I hope he can continue to grow in this way in the final book in the series.
Also even though it's the unpopular ship- JESSA is my endgame. Fight me.
The plot of the novel was enjoyable, albeit a little slow in the middle. But saying this, this was more of a "character development" novel to me rather than an action packed plot developer. Mortmain and his freaky automatons make an appearance once again, and I found myself a little scared of them in this book as they seemed more real. I did really enjoy the change of scenery we received in the quick visit to the Yorkshire Institute. I love hearing about other institutes and Shadowhunters in other countries. Also, the little Magnus scenes were so great.
Overall, this book was really enjoyable for me. Although I felt it was a little slow as it was more of a "character development" style of installment, I really enjoyed learning more about everyone's favourite characters. Thankfully no filler or middle book syndrome here. I'm very excited to pick up Clockwork Princess, and get back into reading and blogging, ASAP!
