5 Scary YA Books Perfect For Halloween Reading

Hi guys! It's that time of year again, the weather gets cooler, the leaves begin to change colour and the spookiness is ramped up.

So why not embrace all things Halloween this October by reading some creepy and scary books that I recommend....

If you have any spooky YA books that you think I would  enjoy, please leave a comment below and I will definitely add them to my Goodreads TBR! Click the book covers to read my full review on each title...let's get the spooky recommendations started

Series: First book in a duology
Book Depository ]

Why this book is spooky and perfect for Halloween;

This book was absolutely terrifying, like almost sleeping with the light on scary!
The book centres around an alternative Ireland where children are sent to a school / military academy to prepare themselves for the day when they are kidnapped by evil fae creatures and tortured beyond comparison.

The writing style is extremely captivating, the main character Nessa is just so badass and powerful. The gruesome and haunting descriptions of the horrors of this novel are terrifying. Definitely a perfect novel for Halloween.

Why Coraline is the perfect atmospheric read for Halloween;

Coraline is definitely one you may have already had in mind for this time of the month.

The book centers on Coraline, a young girl who moves to a new place into a new house with her mum and dad. There she meets lots of unusual neighbours and discovers a land behind a secret passage that is identical to her life..but different

A spooky and atmospheric read perfect for Halloween whether you read the book or watch the movie.

It's definitely a must for me every Halloween!

Why Monster is the Perfect Suspenseful Halloween Read;

Monster was my first CJ Skuse book and it did not disappoint.

As a blizzard rages outside, strange things are afoot in the school’s hallways, and legends of the mysterious Beast of Bathory – a big cat rumoured to room the moors outside the school – run wild. All is fine, until people from the school start to go missing - and the legend of the beast appears to be less of a story....

The book was really well written, with an interesting band of female characters and dialogue. The novel keeps the suspense and the horror of the "beast" going throughout the novel.

A perfect novel if you are a fan of monster horror movies at Halloween.

 Why Sara's Face is the Perfect Edge-Of-Seat Thriller for Halloween;

Sara's Face is a book I read years and years ago and has stayed with me since! Whenever people look for YA horror novels, I usually tell them to pick this up and give it a go.

Sara's Face centres around our main character Sara, who at 16 has come to the conclusion her face is not right for her. She goes to consultations with Psychiatrists who tell her she has “Karel’s Syndrome,” and that the only cure is to have a new face. Enter the infamous ageing singer Jonathan Heat, who has had so much plastic surgery on his face that it is now irredeemably unpleasant. He will pay for an operation that will give him Sara’s face: and Sara will get a transplant.

This book had me looking over my shoulder and jumping at noises. Definitely an underrated and underhyped novel perfect for the spooky month!

Why Under My Skin Will Have You Reading Through Your Fingers;
Book Depository ]
It may come as no surprise to find Under My Skin on this list as if you have followed my blog long enough, you will know Juno Dawson is one of my all time favourite authors!

This book centers around 17 year old Sally who is quite introverted and shy. She decided to be bold and get a tattoo of a pin up girl "Molly Sue", who represents everything she is not, unafraid and comfortable in her own skin.

Sally begins to hear voices in her head - or rather, one voice in particular: Molly Sue's. Things then begin to take a sinister turn as Sally learns just what can happen when someone gets truly under your skin.

This book was so suspenseful, well written, full of jumps and twists and amazing characters. The novel also contains a lot of feminist themes which sometimes horror can be known for being quite the opposite, but this book was really a refreshing take on the genre. Highly recommend.

Honorable Mention;

Why The Spooks Apprentice is Equal Parts Creepy and Adventurous;

The Spooks Apprentice was also a book I read a long time ago. The first in this YA / MG series, this book is much scarier than it looks.

The novel takes place around a young boy training to be an exorcist. Thomas Ward is the seventh son of a seventh son and has been apprenticed to the local Spook. The job is hard, the Spook is distant and many apprentices have failed before Thomas.

Somehow Thomas must learn how to exorcise ghosts, contain witches and bind boggarts. But when he is tricked into freeing Mother Malkin, the most evil witch in the County, the horror begins

The book contains gruesome descriptions, thrilling plot twists and exorcisms a plenty. Whats not Halloweeny about that?!
