Review: Apocalypse Cow by O.R Sorrell

Publication Date: June 2024

Publisher: Guppy Books

Blurb: [ Goodreads ]

Mel loves Sasha and dreams of a day that Sasha might reciprocate her feelings (even though she's straight) - so the fact that it's thirty degrees outside in January and hasn't rained for a year simply passes her by.

Mel is just about coping with being the only 'out' lesbian in school and all the sniping that Janis and Ella aim her way, as well as her dreary Saturday job with the stupidly posh Dorian... But when domestic animals suddenly lethally turn on the human race, and Mel finds herself stuck in a mansion with Dorian and Ella, her love-life suddenly turns on its head in the most extraordinary way.

This might be both one of my most unexpected reads and favourite books of the year!

An apocalypse caused by human pollution and climate change causes animals to lash out, mutate and take over the city. From the first page I was absolutely hooked. If you know anything about me, I love to watch those films that are so crazy and out there - think along the lines of "Zombeavers" or "Sharknado". This was absolutely my perfect cup of tea.
Our main character Mel was just so likeable. I loved her from the jump. From her unrequited crush on her girl best friend, her interactions with her family and friends, and her Saturday job in the local farm shop with rich idiot Dorian. All of her interactions really read like a real teenage girls, and it made her so three dimensional. Dorian was also a favourite of mine. I loved how when we first see him through the eyes of Mel he appears as just this privileged rich boy who doesn't really seem to care about anyone other than himself but that changes as we spend more time with him when being locked in his mansion while ravenous beasts attack the city. He really grew on me and over the course of the novel and how his friendship with Ella and Mel grew, he became such a favourite character of mine.

The whole premise of the survival apocalypse was just brilliantly written. It was so fast paced without seeming like it was jumping from one thing to the next. The character growth was fleshed out and progressed perfectly throughout the story. The descriptions of the animals, the radioactive mice were a personal favourite along with the 6 foot seagulls, and how the city had been changed almost over night was all so well written I could perfectly visualise everything that was happening. Honestly this would make such an amazing mini series.

The book overall was just amazing, I think I flew through it in 24 hours and did not stop talking about it to anyone that would listen. Such a unique take on the apocalypse style novel and written with such real teenage voices and feelings that I think this is one that deserves all the praise I hope it is getting. I have recommended this book to everyone at this point. The ending was left a little open and I am hoping, begging, praying for a sequel (Please OR Sorrel if by some miracle you are reading my little blog - give me a whole series of this delightful story!).

A stunning debut that is both serious and totally bonkers. I can not believe this is OR Sorrel's first book but sign me up now for anything else they write I will be first in line!
