Review: Pawn by Aimee Carter

|Publication Date: Nov 26 2013 | Published by: Harlequinn Teen | Source: Netgalley eARC |

Plot:

YOU CAN BE A VII. IF YOU GIVE UP EVERYTHING.

For Kitty Doe, it seems like an easy choice. She can either spend her life as a III in misery, looked down upon by the higher ranks and forced to leave the people she loves, or she can become a VII and join the most powerful family in the country.

If she says yes, Kitty will be Masked—surgically transformed into Lila Hart, the Prime Minister's niece, who died under mysterious circumstances. As a member of the Hart family, she will be famous. She will be adored. And for the first time, she will matter.

There's only one catch. She must also stop the rebellion that Lila secretly fostered, the same one that got her killed …and one Kitty believes in. Faced with threats, conspiracies and a life that's not her own, she must decide which path to choose—and learn how to become more than a pawn in a twisted game she's only beginning to understand.

Review:

I was really excited to receive this book in exchange for an honest review from Netgalley. I've heard so many great things about Aimee Carters other series, The Goddess Inheritance, but I've yet to read it. That made me really excited that I'd been approved for the ARC.

The plot of this book introduced us to a really interesting and vivid dystopian world. The book introduces us to a society made up of ranks from I to VII , with I being poorest and VII being the Prime Minister and family. The novel shows us the world from the perspective of Kitty Doe, an Extra- each family can have only one child and if they have another these are called extras and are moved to a group home or orphanage. I thought it was interesting seeing the hardships the lower classes lived through. On the flip side I thought it was so different seeing the luxury the Harts lived in. Although the beginning of the book was a little slow, it really picked up during the middle.

The writing style was captivating. It's use of title names was also really interesting and is an aspect of a book I really like but rarely see. Aimee Carter created such captivating plot and setting in this book. Her writing was descriptive and addictive and it really drew the reader in. She used good wit to lighten moods but her writing also became serious in moments where it was needed. I hope to check out more of her work in future.

The characters in the book were really well written. Kitty was a strong character, who was a little naive at the beginning but grew to be more knowledgeable of how the corrupt world works. Her relationship with Benjy was also really good. I thought there might be a love triangle with Knox, Lila's fiance, but thankfully it was not on the cards. I also liked reading about the more corrupt characters in the book. Every character in the book is keeping secrets and it was so interesting learning what they're secrets were. I loved reading about the corruption of the Hart family and the hatred and lust for power that comes with their family

There were so many well written twists in the book that I didn't see coming. This book was great and I'm so thankful I was able to receive this for review. The sequel, The Captive , is set to be released in 2014.

If you liked The Selection by Kiera Cass,  I think you'll love this.
